The Short Read 📝

Fifty years of Indian railway passenger data reveal that India’s economic growth is deepening rather than widening, challenging the popular narrative of broad-based income mobility. While air travel is at an all-time high, railway passenger traffic—a strong proxy for mass income growth—peaked in 2013 and has since declined.

This drop is driven entirely by the cheapest, unreserved second-class segment, where minor fare hikes led to massive demand destruction, indicating high price sensitivity among the poorest. This is a great case-study of how urbanisation and replacement of tree cover with concrete buildings impacts day to day life. As more Indian cities urbanise at an increasing rate, expect more of such case to pop up. Read more….
