Last week, India reported its Q1 GDP growth numbers. On the face of it, it has been a great quarter but there has been a furore on the quality of the data used. A lot of analysts point towards the divergence between the reported 7.8% growth and how corporate earnings/companies are feeling not that great. Here is an explainer from India’s former Chief Economic Advisor on the data concerns.

The Short Read 📝

The article portrays the U.S. Foreign Service as a distributed fact-checking machine: its purpose is not dramatic storytelling or advocacy, but building and updating an accurate model of the world. Diplomats gather clues from practitioners, officials, businesses, and local experts, then synthesize them into cables. Their processes encourage nuance: reports face review from multiple offices, while worldwide rotations, nonpartisan hiring exams, geographic distance, and career incentives discourage ideological entrenchment.

A case study contrasts diplomatic analysis of Kenyan data workers with media narratives that ignored local labor-market tradeoffs. The system is imperfect: it can be slow, data-poor, siloed, and vulnerable to groupthink, as shown by failures over Iraq’s nonexistent weapons program and Iran’s revolution. Nevertheless, the author argues that structure matters more than individual identity. Journalism and advocacy remain valuable lenses, but readers should recognize how each selects and frames information—and why diplomacy’s deliberately boring perspective often preserves complexity and truth. The Long Read 📜

Brian Potter reviews Morris Chang’s autobiography to explain how TSMC emerged from an unlikely convergence of experience, policy, and chance. Chang’s semiconductor career at Sylvania and Texas Instruments taught him that manufacturing yields, scale, learning curves, and disciplined management create durable advantages. After conflicts and failures, he joined Taiwan’s Industrial Technology Research Institute (ITRI), where his reform agenda collapsed.

His success was recognizing that rising fab costs and the coming “fabless” model created demand for a manufacturer. Rather than funding three separate facilities, Chang proposed a common foundry that would fabricate customers’ designs without competing with them. Taiwan, Philips, and private investors financed TSMC. Validation came when Intel outsourced production; rigorous quality systems, larger factories, process innovation, and willingness to adopt risky new equipment drove rapid growth. Potter’s central lesson is that TSMC’s dominance was not inevitable: it depended on Chang’s accumulated insight, Taiwan’s industrial policy, and unusually contingent decisions. Read more…
