How to Find Ancient Assyrian Cities Using Economics - by Maxwell Tabarrok
Maxwell Tabarrok is an economics PhD student at Harvard Business School. His research interests include the economics of growth and innovation, urban economics, and AI.
This is an interesting look at how trade has changed over time. In ancient times, Assyrian traders used camels and wagons on dirt roads, while today, Turkish truckers use 18-wheelers on highways. Despite these differences, both traded about four times less between cities that are twice as far apart. This might seem puzzling, but it makes more sense when you consider that modern economies have much more activity than in the past. People today are wealthier and engage in more trade, which can often be satisfied locally. Richer countries also grow more in the services sector, which doesn't rely as much on trade. Still, it's surprising that the impact of distance on trade has remained so consistent over time. Read more…
